1-2-1 Counselling have been running a free counselling service right here in York for the best part of three decades.

Recognising a need for short term mental health support for people who couldn’t necessarily afford counselling, they set up the easily accessible charity to help people experiencing stress, emotional difficulties or finding it hard dealing with life events.

Based at Tower House, Fishergate, the service is run by a team of experienced, professionally trained counsellors. There are around 20 at the moment offering between 40 and 50 free hours a week.

Although the service is free, they do welcome, and indeed need, donations.  Every counsellor gives their time for free, but each session costs around £15 to run.

1-2-1 Counselling have a gentle approach to counselling, with all counsellors having a similar ethos and driven by the knowledge that the service is much needed and the positive feedback they get. Many clients are recommended via GPs and other local agencies like York Mind, but anyone can call to make an appointment.

Indeed the counsellors run the board of trustees and are ready for some fresh impetus into their service. They are currently looking for a Secretary and Trustees to help steer them. They are keen to have people join them with experience in charity management and also in bid writing.
