Three York women who set up new arts company to champion women and girls launch a new free project with funding from Make It York Cultural Wellbeing Grant this week.

Bolshee CIC, a new a female-led creative projects company, based in York. Set up by 3 artists and friends, to produce projects with the aim to help everyone feel heard, empowered and supported, regardless of their background. With a particular focus on championing women and girls.

The company is made up of Creative Director, Paula Clark, Associate Director, Lizzy Whynes and Creative Producer, Megan Bailey. Collectively the Team has 35 years experience in creating, producing and delivering creative arts projects with young people and adults; and at only 6 months old they have already made some noise in the city with collaborations with York St John University, At The Mill, Drawsome Festival, York Theatre Royal, ARC Stockton and York Design Week.

This week the Bolshee team are launching a new 8 week autobiographical performance project, Bolshee Women: Perform Yourself  for self identifying women aged 25 and over in collaboration with Make it York and funded by the Cultural Wellbeing Grant.

Paula Clark explains “It is so important that we find our voice, take up space and share our truths. This is what Bolshee Women is all about. Coming together in solidarity to make friends, be creative and share our experiences has a hugely positive impact on our wellbeing. We wanted to offer a cultural provision, this time for women over the age of 25. We feel that this age group don’t have as many opportunities to get involved in performance in the city as younger people do. We also know that women will suffer disproportionately from the financial crisis we are facing. That’s why Bolshee Women will be FREE to attend.”

Bolshee Women: Perform Yourself takes place 6.30-8pm October 20th – 8th December 2022 at Friargate Theatre. The free 8 week drama course is for all self-identifying women 25 years old or over who want to find their voice. We will explore contemporary performance, and autobiographical devising techniques including free drawing and creative writing. No experience necessary. All materials will be provided.
