Explore York Libraries and Archives are looking for two freelance artists who are passionate about York’s history for an exciting project this autumn. Explore’s Creative Cafe will draw inspiration from the treasure trove of York City Archives.

Salary: £1400 Fee for specific contract

Contract Type: Freelance

Closing date: Friday 11 August 2023 at 12 noon.

They are looking for two professional artists (individual artists who are enthusiastic about working closely with another artist are welcome to apply, as are pairs of artists) with experience in participatory arts practice, including working with people living with mental ill health, to run eight two-hour Creative Cafés at Tang Hall Explore from October to December 2023, culminating in an exhibition.

During an eight-week period, a group of 10 participants from the community in Tang Hall will work with two artists who will enable them to engage with a variety of artistic and creative activities to create work which will form an exhibition at the end of the project. The theme of the exhibition will be inspired by documents from our archives relating to Tang Hall.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with people from Tang Hall and use Explore’s rich treasure trove of unique documents, plans, artefacts, and photographs to inspire residents to create work which will enable them to connect with their community, foster belonging and improve wellbeing.
