Many independent bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs in York are still open in a new format.

And even after the welcome announcement of guaranteed staff wages, rather than being forced to action mass lay-offs, they need your custom.

We know the pubs/cafes are officially closed for sit down service and communal gathering, but our independents are being innovative for your benefit.

Many are offering take away food and drink direct from their door. Some have paired-down menus and are delivering to your door.

Some are converting into shops so they can sell you produce, food and drink directly.

And just announced are some amazing food establishments who are turning to making and delivering affordable homemade meals for our older and more vulnerable residents.

That’s because many of our cafes and bars still have food and beverage stock that would be ruined should they close. It’s also because it is their livelihood and passion.

And importantly, it is because they want to support you the York residents and our amazing key workers and our vulnerable population at this unprecedented time.

And all the owners I spoke to are being extra vigilant about hygiene, fully taking into account the government’s recommendations.

Knowing who is doing delivery and take outs will be so useful, we want to support the businesses and replace all our celebratory planned meals out over the next couple of months with deliveries.

Emma, Acomb resident

The questions to you, good people of York, are:

  • Can you pick up a takeaway from them?
  • Can you order a delivery?
  • Could you buy a voucher from them to use in the future?

At this exceptional time, answering positively to any of these questions could be the difference between that business – your favourite hang out maybe – surviving, or not.

At the time of writing (March 21st) the following cafe/bars were open and offering takeaway/delivery.
