Keep Your Pet does whatever is needed to care for the animals of older and vulnerable people when the owners are ill, to enable owners to return to caring for their animals when they have recovered.
Keep Your Pet began in 2012 when a group of people approached Age UK York concerned about the problems which can arise for pet-owners when they are in hospital or incapacitated in some way and have no-one to look after their pet. We were particularly concerned to hear that some people may give up their pet for lack of help to cope or may even forego vital medical treatment because they had no one to turn to.
The Age UK York service “Keep Your Pet” is dedicated to support people to remain independent and combat isolation, as often the animal in their lives is their only company.
Ten years later Keep Your Pet has demonstrated that the need for such provision is even greater than we had realised.
Age UK York recruit and train volunteers who walk and foster dogs, feed cats, transport pets to the vet and signpost people to other Age UK York services. We encourage owners to register their pets in advance of needing help, so that we can be prepared for the pet’s needs. This gives comfort and reassurance to owners. Currently Keep Your Pet has over 130 registered owners and around 100 volunteers.
Age UK York, undertake the day-to-day administration and contact with pet owners. The service is delivered by volunteers and a group of core volunteers who also fundraise and come up with ideas for events and publicity. Events have included:
- Our annual dog walk on the Knavesmire each September
- St Crux sales
- Sales of goods at local fairs
- Musical evenings
- Presence at summer shows and carnivals, invaluable in raising the profile of Keep Your Pet.
We have found that fundraising is fun, and we welcome more people to help with events.
Whilst the services are provided by volunteers, management and administration do require funding. We rely on donations to go towards these costs.
