We heard that the Peasholme Charity had a new person join their team helping to support people with multiple complex needs who might be at risk of homelessness, so they did this guest blog for us to fill us in.
Peasholme Charity work with disadvantaged and socially excluded people, in particular those that are homeless or at imminent risk of losing their homes.
We’re a small but dedicated team, helping some of the most vulnerable people in York.
We’re delighted to welcome Ian to the team, who joins the charity as ‘Next Steps’ – Housing Link Worker, funded by The National Lottery ‘Coronavirus Community Support Fund’.
The purpose of Ian’s role is give 1-2-1 support and guidance to people with multiple complex needs, experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Ian will support rough sleepers and those at risk of homelessness to secure their housing. He can help set up utility accounts, a bank account and direct debits, and can support a person to manage bills and finances until they have the skills and confidence to do it themselves.
I’ve spent my first few weeks working alongside Ray, carrying out street walks, getting to know the people I’ll be supporting and meeting partners too.
I’m very much a York person and what I’ve noticed is that more people are accessing services for the first time as a result of the pandemic. People may feel awkward about accessing services and they really shouldn’t. I’m really keen to get a dialogue going with these people and let them know what support is available.”
Homelessness figures suggest that there’s between 5-8 rough sleepers in York, but that number fluctuates as people access emergency accommodation through The Salvation Army and City of York Council outreach teams.
At Peasholme Charity, we’re preparing for a possible rise in homelessness in York. People are being pulled into poverty through job losses, the furlough scheme ending and the ban on landlords evicting tenants being lifted. Yvonne, Charity Manager went onto say.
“Ian’s new role is so important, especially now in the current climate. We need resources in place to prevent homelessness from occurring. People are being pulled into poverty because of the pandemic – through unemployment, a reduced income and increased debt.
Ian will be available to prevent a crisis situation from escalating. He has a lot of compassion and he’ll be an asset to the team.”
