Established in March 2022, York Active Youth is a new charity which has been set up to provide quality transport for “not for profit” groups working with young people at the most affordable cost.

They have two LWB Ford Transit minibuses with 16 passenger seats with seatbelts. At present neither minibus can accommodate wheelchairs. Maintained by “M. Brittain York Ltd” with daily driver inspections and safety checks done at the garage every 10 weeks in line with Section 19 permits.

All drivers are DBS checked paid drivers, friendly and relaxed people and often  former teachers. They also have a D1 driving licence and a current MIDAS certificate.

The cost is calculated in two parts with payment done by invoice prior to departure.

It is £18 per hour timed from when the driver starts the vehicle safety checks prior to departure from the compound. The driver will receive £15 per hour and the remaining £3 per hour covers employer’s national insurance and employer’s pension contributions where appropriate and also administration costs.

It is then £1 per mile – counted from and back to Moorlane Youth Centre. This is to cover the cost of fuel, insurance, maintenance, road tax etc.

If there is a demand, York Active Youth will investigate the option of wheelchair accessible vehicles. The charity is keen to move to electric minibuses when funding permits. The next step is to investigate the option of applying for grants to cover this more environmentally friendly option.

York Active Youth are now taking bookings on a first come first served basis for journeys between September 5th 2022 and March 12th 2023.
