Social Vision caught up with Rebecca Carr of Kaizen Arts about the very first York Design Week. Here’s her guest blog.
We are York Design Week, we’re a group of local creative agencies that share an ambition to bring together people, in places to talk about, and do good things.
Kaizen Arts CIC, Dogeatcog and United by Design have teamed up to present a new vision of our city through design and social interventions. We are inviting you to join us in creating that vision, and to celebrate the wealth of creativity that our city has to offer.
On the 23rd October 2019, we are launching the first ever York Design Week. We’ve put together a curated programme of events that function for people from all walks of life – design is everyday, it is open and accessible, it is creativity with purpose.
We are intent on spreading the message that we are all creative and that we can all make a difference, no matter how small we are (yes we believe in Greta.)
A couple of our not-to-miss events are:
Generate at the National Railway Museum 26 – 3rd November, National Railway Museum
What is data and what does it mean? Generate helps us to visualise it, playfully…
This interactive installation takes you on a journey through a series of arches. Under each arch you’ll answer a question by feeding a ribbon through holes relating to multiple-choice answers. As more people engage with Generate, it slowly transforms into a tunnel of colour.
This year, GENERATE will be at the National Railway Museum and will be asking you what you feel about Transport and Sustainability!
What is the problem and whose problem is it? 30th October 6.30pm, York St John, Temple Hall
A collaborative conversation for our future. How can we work together to solve big problems through creative thinking and practical action?
Presented by Kaizen Arts Agency, My Future York, The Guild of Media Arts
The event aims to discover, explore and pin point how grass roots practical action can influence top down strategy and how that strategy can translate into practical action – to question assumptions, to disrupt prescribed methodologies and create a platform for good change, inspiring a move towards cultural democracy. The discussion attempts to build bridges, join up thinking and ideas, and influence an action plan for key stakeholders in the city (this includes all people who want to be involved in making York a more vibrant and collaborative place – intergenerational, interdisciplinary, private, public and community sectors).
We are inviting historians, councillors, teenagers, creatives practitioners, students, environmental activists – everyone who would like to join this collaborative hustings. We want to communicate the notion that every one of us is creative, and we want to promote this within our communities – culture is made by us, not for us.
This long table event will aim to be inclusive and empathetic, and give those who may not always be heard, a chance to pipe up.
Lasting Resonance
We cant wait to meet you at some of the events, and would love you to get involved in whatever way you can! Pop into Snowhome on Gillygate to adopt a #yorkoak acorn to germinate at home and pick up the full programme there too.
