Walks galore at York Cemetery

York Cemetery has a full season of walks over the coming months. Here is the full list:

Sunday 21 April, 11am -12
Easter Egg Hunt Fun for the kids. Free event including refreshments.

Sunday 28 April, 2pm
A look at a variety of monuments and their makers. David Poole.

Sunday 5 May, 2pm
The History of York Cemetery Guided walk exploring the fascinating history of York Cemetery. With Sheila Bartlett.

Tuesday 14 May, 6.30pm
New Blossom in the Cemetery. An informative yet relaxing walk around the cemetery gardens with Clive Dawson.

Sunday 19 May, 2pm
FREE A Victorian Cemetery York’s Dead Good Festival In collaboration with St Leonard’s Hospice. Sponsored by Last Wishes Funerals. With Clive Dawson

Sunday 9 June, 2pm
NEW Not a Good Way to Go. Second in a series of walks visiting some more people who suffered sudden and unexpected deaths. With Dennis Shaw.

Sunday 23 June, 2pm
Garden Walk & Honey Bee Talk. Enjoy a tour of the cemetery gardens with Clive Dawson then find out about bees with Beekeeper Anthony Day.

Saturday 29 June, 11.30am & 1.30pm
Living History Meet at the gatehouse. Two performances based on lives of people buried in the cemetery, by Fulford School Year 10 Drama Pupils.

Sunday 30 June, 2pm
Lord Mayors and Sheriffs buried in the Cemetery.  A walk visiting their gravestones & hearing their stories, with the knowledgeable David Poole.

Wednesday 17 July, 9pm
Bat Night no 1.  Meet in the chapel for a presentation then enjoy the guided walk observing and listening to bats. With Claire Storey. Bring a torch!

Sunday 21 July, 2pm
Brewers & Publicans in the Cemetery Guided walk. Jenny Hawkins tells the interesting historic tales of York brewers & publicans.

Wednesday 24 July, 9pm
Bat Night no 2.  Meet in the chapel for a presentation then enjoy the guided walk observing and listening to bats. With Claire Storey. Bring a torch!

Sunday 28 July 2pm
The Arts in the Cemetery. With T Bylo.

Sunday August, 2pm
TBA Butterfly Walk. Study butterflies in the cemetery’s beautiful, natural environment with.

Sunday 18 August, 2pm
Tree Walk. Discover the wonderful trees of York Cemetery with Clive Dawson.

Friday 23 August, 7pm
Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths. With T Bylo.

Sunday 1 September, 2pm
NEW The Shopkeepers of Kirkgate. Visit some people whose shops and businesses can be found in the Castle Museum’s famous recreated indoor street. With Dennis Shaw

Sunday 15 September, 2pm
Industrialists in the Cemetery. Explore York’s industrial past with a guided walk led by Linda Slack and Christine Walmsley.

Sunday 22 September, 2pm
A Cemetery Stroll (Victorian Section). Interesting memorials and characters in the Victorian Section and a tour of the chapel catacombs, with walk leader Roger Daniel.

Sunday 29 September, 2pm
Military Heroes in the Cemetery. Visit the graves of military heroes and hear their stories. Pauline Beckwith leads this guided walk.

Friday 13 December, 7.30pm: (gates open 7pm)
Annual Carol Concert. In the beautiful grade 2* listed cemetery chapel: Drama, traditional carols & readings, a musical performance by Quodlibet, home-made mince pies and fruit punch. A wonderful evening to get you into the Christmas spirit! FREE
