In 2023 Bolshee CIC created a new youth arts project, Bolshee Young Creatives, in collaboration with local recording studio and Community Interest Company, Young Thugs, a state-of-the-art recording studio in York with community at its heart.

Bolshee Young Creatives (BYC) is a new initiative for curious and adventurous young people who want to be creative in all sorts of ways and want to make things happen in York, including showcasing their musical talents!

This year the Young Creatives have had the opportunity to explore theatre, movement, drawing, creative writing and have even written and recorded their own songs with the support of the Bolshee Team and industry professionals, including York recording studio, Young Thugs.

In 2023 Bolshee CIC created a new youth arts project, Bolshee Young Creatives, in collaboration with local recording studio and Community Interest Company, Young Thugs, a state-of-the-art recording studio in York with community at its heart.

A participant who attends weekly sessions, said:

“It’s lovely and fun and creative and open to all kinds of people. We love being creatively cool on a Wednesday.”

Paula Clark, Creative Director, said:

“We have also received some wonderful feedback from parents about their children’s experience, including one who said: ‘My daughter has really enjoyed the BYC sessions. It is such a creative, fun and supportive space for her to explore and express herself. It’s the highlight of her week.’

Another told us that his child has ‘definitely come out of her shell more since the beginning of the course. She’s more confident sharing her drawings and songs and looks forward to what the team have in store each week.’”

Paula Clark explained the thinking of weekly sessions for young people in York:

“There is immense learning and insight into society that can come from co-creation and investment in communities, especially young people, that will challenge our own perceptions of what we think we know from our privileged positions.

What is the lived experience of a young person in 2024? We don’t know because young people’s voices are seldom heard. We do know that having a space to have a voice is able to empower and unify, it’s a game changer. That is what this project is all about”

Booking is now open for Summer 2024 which will see the Young Creatives coming together to explore the idea of testimony.

The project, Young Voices, has been funded by Arts Rights Truth, a research project led by the Centre for Applied Human Rights and the History of Art Department at the University of York, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation. We will be asking big questions about how young people experience the world and finding bold, brave and creative visual ways to share this with the people of York this summer.

The project in collaboration with, dogeatcog design and animation agency, will give young people aged 8-14 the autonomy to decide for themselves what they want to testify and how they want to say it. The Bolshee team are working with exciting Visual artist Kat McCabe to co-create art that responds to what feels urgent and relevant to them right now.
