York’s first 24-hour Safe Place

McDonalds on Blake Street is York’s first 24-hour Safe Place. A place anyone can go to, any time night or day, if they are feeling overwhelmed, unwell, or just need a little time out. It might be a teenager feeling uncomfortable during a night out, for example, or a person living with dementia who needs a helping hand.

There are 19 Safe Places in York; public buildings, shops, cafes, libraries and museums all offering a friendly welcome, if someone needs it.

They are open to anyone who feels vulnerable when they are out and about; younger people, disabled people, those living with dementia, mental health issues or a learning disability.

If things go wrong, people feel confused, anxious, unwell, scared, or are out of sorts and fancy a chat, head to a Safe Place and seek help.

Knowing that Safe Places are in York gives people the confidence to get out and about,  reducing isolation and increasing social interaction.

All Safe Places have a sticker displayed in their window which lets people know they will get a warm and supportive welcome inside. There’s also a Smartphone App which will take people to their nearest Safe Place location when out and about.  Look out for the logo or download the App on your phone.

York’s Safe Place Coordinator, Maria Munday, is looking for new places to register as Safe Places.  If you have any ideas of a good place you think should be become a Safe Place, (somewhere you feel safe or you’ve been helped by someone) or you know where people are friendly and helpful – please let her know and she will contact them.

For any more information, or to be  added to their mailing list for regular updates, please contact safeplaces@yorkcvs.org.uk or call 01904 621133.
